Unmatched Performance for Marine Propulsion:
Fixed Pitch: The EMD two-cycle engine provides a large margin of available power above the demand curve to provide superior acceleration and responsiveness. By comparison, in the fixed pitch propeller applications, the available power of a typical four-cycle engine narrowly meets the propeller demand curve.
Controllable Pitch: The additional power capacity of the EMD two-cycle engine enables it to accept virtually any pitch at any rate, without overload. Four-cycle engine manufacturers limit available engine power to levels significantly below their engine's continuous rating to protect against engine overload. By firing each cylinder once per revolution and benefiting from plentiful combustion air through our unique clutched turbo-changer design, the EMD E 23 Series engine is unique in its ability to smoothly accept load at any engine speed and at a rate no other medium speed engine in the world can match. Testing in marine applications has demonstrated acceleration from idle to full load in less than 11 seconds.
Emissions
The EMD® E 23 B 710 Series engine has achieved US EPA Tier 4 Final Certification and IMO III certification. The Tier 4 E 23 B is the industry’s only completely integrated solution.
Our bullet Proof US EPA Tier 3 engines are available for vessel repowers. IMO II engines are still produced today and immediately available. Our two-cycle engine continues to respond to new emissions challenges while maintaining our efficiency and life-cycle cost advantages
